Wedding gifts

money gifts

Money gifts are always a good idea when a person doesn't want anything in particular for their birthday, Christmas or wedding or asks for money. You can't go wrong with a money gift – even if it is not much, no-one looks a gift horse in the mouth, as the saying goes.

Better a small gift than none at all.

There's nothing worse than forgetting a birthday, wedding or anniversary or even gifts for Christmas. But if you do forget to buy a present, a nicely packaged money gift is much better than no gift.

How to make your own money gifts

Fold your own money gift

It's easy to make your own money gifts. The simplest is a decorated envelope of money. You could enlist the help of children to paint and stick things on the envelope, or even make it yourself in whatever size you like. For something a little fancier, this book gives you plenty of tips and tricks for only five euros.

You could for example make money origami. Fold a little frog out of a bank note and draw him a pond. We will insert a picture of the little frog and his pond here soon. Here, you will find suggestions of how you can make your own money gifts for the birth of a baby or christening.

And if you don't have the time or are not the creative type, you can also buy money gifts both online and in shops.

These come in a variety of shapes and sizes – from a plush money sack, a picture frame, wedding treasure chest, money tree or money cake to a cash cow or piggy bank. There are plenty of ideas in our money gifts section.

More gift ideas to make yourself

Sometimes it's hard to find the right gift for the bridal pair that already have everything they need for their house or for the birthday of a person you don't know very well. Money gifts are also always welcome for first communions, confirmations and christenings but are only something special if you have made them yourself, not just put some money into an envelope. Home-made gifts are like personal gifts, in that the person can see that a lot of thought and effort has gone into the gift.

There are a wide variety of ideas for home-made money gifts. You could create a picture out of different notes and frame it for a very different kind of artwork.

Or for children, what about brightly painted matchboxes with coins as wheels? These matchboxes can be made into cars, tractors and trains with toy drivers and notes hidden in one or two.

Bouquets are also a wonderful way to beautify cash. A simple bunch of flowers becomes a much more valuable present with money origami roses or butterflies. You can make fantastic money gifts with origami.

Home-made money gifts are made with love, are real head turners and are sure to please. With a bit of imagination and a few simple tools, you can create wonderful money gifts in no time at all that won't be quickly forgotten. A bit of talent with paper, glue and other tools and you can make beautiful money gifts that can be used for almost any occasion.

Wrapping money gifts

Money in an envelope can be boring and unimaginative.

We have several suggestions for how you can make cash presents more interesting.

Cut the front pocket out of a pair of old jeans, arrange in a photo frame, and stuff with bills, letting them peek out the top of the pocket. Affix the glass cover and your original money gift is finished!

An imaginative money gift for someone who has just passed their driver's licence test – Buy a toy car and fill with two small figures and the boot with cash, then wrap in clear cellophane. This looks great and the new driver is sure to be thrilled!

Another suggestion for an originally wrapped money gift – Buy a shallow plant pot or dish and fill with sand, 2-3 small palms and a few shells and sea creatures and a miniature treasure chest to hide the money.

Or, make up a packet of jelly using a candle holder as a mould – green looks particularly good! Insert 1 or 2 euro coins into the jelly before it is fully set, and voilà, your jelly money candle holder is finished!

Coins frozen in ice are even trickier to get out. The couple will get a real money shower when the ice melts, freeing the coins which are collected in a sieve.

What about a treasure chest filled with gold? Fill an old wooden chest with coins and decorate it pirate-style.

Or you could tape bills onto the underside of a tie. The trick here is to fold the notes right so that a 10 euro note looks like 1,000 euro!

Another great idea for a money gift - attach 2 folded 20 euro bills onto a piece of black card, leaving a stripe in the middle so that it looks like the bill has been ripper in half! Buy a transparent plastic bowl and fill with party streamers, sweets and coins or 5 euro bills. This could be a good present for someone who is a little bit 'chaotic'!

Flower bouquets can also be decorated with origami bills. You can fold the notes into butterflies for a beautiful and valuable present!

Make the butterflies by folding the note horizontally into an accordion and then securing in the middle with a paper clip.

You could also give the bridal pair balloons filled with confetti and money to pop themselves.

Alternatively, you could create a romantic tea light heart with coins set in the wax.

For weddings, you can also make a reference to the future patter of tiny feet with a money gift such as a potty with chocolate cream and coins for a couple with a good sense of humour. Or what about a toy stork bearing money? Future grandmothers are sure to be happy to see this gift.

You could also give a piece of Swiss cheese with rolled up bills and gummy mice in the holes, presented on a wooden chopping board. Wrap the bills up so that the cheese can still be eaten. An easy money gift complete with delicious mice!

Or what about this money gift idea – a private island. Take a large glass bowl (approx 25-30 cm in diameter) and fill the bottom with coins. Cover this with blue-coloured galantine or jelly for the sea. Make an island with dessicated coconut then add a deck chair and umbrella from a toy or craft shop, and a toy palm tree of make your own with a few plant leaves and your wedding gift is finished! The happy couple can use the money straight away for their honeymoon or for whatever they like.
